Understanding sex-toy dimensions online
Product photographs help show shape and colour, but they are not a reliable indication of size. Camera angle, cropping and packaging can make two similarly sized products appear very different, while a large control handle or base can make an insertable section look longer than it is.
The useful question is not simply “How big is it?” It is “Which measurement describes the part I need to compare?” Total length, insertable length, maximum width, internal diameter, head size and weight answer different questions. Reading the label attached to each number makes online comparisons much more dependable.
Start with the measurement name
A single number rarely describes a complete product. Before comparing two listings, check whether the number refers to:
- the complete end-to-end length;
- the portion intended for insertion;
- the widest external point;
- the usable space inside a sleeve or cylinder;
- a base, head, opening or attachment; or
- the packaged item rather than the product itself.
Units matter too. Australian listings commonly mix millimetres, centimetres and inches. Convert both products to the same unit before deciding that one is larger. One inch equals 25.4 mm, but rounding can create small differences between a manufacturer’s metric and imperial figures. Keep the manufacturer’s original measurement where possible rather than creating false precision.
Total length and insertable length are different
Total length measures the complete product from end to end. It may include a handle, controls, base, suction cup, external arm or another section that is not intended for insertion. Total length is useful for storage, reach and understanding how much of the product remains outside the body.
Insertable length describes the section the manufacturer identifies for insertion. Diameter, circumference and maximum width
Diameter is the straight-line distance across a circular section. Circumference is the distance around it. They are not interchangeable: circumference is approximately 3.14 times the diameter for a truly round shape.
Products are not always perfect cylinders. A listing may use maximum width for an oval body, raised texture or pronounced head. Check where that widest point sits and whether the product tapers towards it. A gradual taper presents the same maximum number differently from a shape that reaches its full width immediately.

Some products need several axes
Compact products are often described with three dimensions rather than one. The LELO NEA Originals is listed at 74 × 39 × 34 mm and 42 g. The three figures describe its oval body more usefully than a single 74 mm number, but the current listing does not label the order of the axes. Ask before ordering if that distinction affects fit or storage.
The same rule applies to storage cases, controllers and machines. Read the order in which the manufacturer presents length, width and height, and do not assume every brand uses the same order. If a diagram is available, match each number to its arrow.
Weight belongs beside dimensions when a product will be held, repositioned or transported. Two products with similar outer measurements can differ substantially when one contains a large motor, battery, glass body or rigid internal frame. A listed product weight should also be distinguished from shipping weight, which includes packaging and accessories.
Use format-specific measurements
Different product types have their own useful dimensions:

- Masturbators: check usable internal length, opening width, case dimensions and whether the opening or mechanism is rigid or flexible.

Material names alone do not provide a universal firmness scale. Silicone, TPE and mixed constructions can each be produced in different densities or used over a rigid core. Look for a description of which section flexes, whether a joint is adjustable and how the base or handle moves. Words such as “soft” and “firm” are more useful when the listing explains the construction behind them.
Make the scale visible at home
Draw the listed length and maximum width on paper, or place a ruler beside your hand. For a three-dimensional product, sketch both the front and side measurements. This is more reliable than comparing a product with a hand, model or prop in a photograph because the camera distance may be unknown.
A familiar household object can help you picture scale, but it is only a visual comparison. Do not use an improvised household item as an intimate product. If the dimensions remain unclear, ask the retailer for the specific missing measurement before ordering.

The measurements needed depend on the format, but a useful record normally identifies:
- Total length or complete assembled size
- Insertable or usable internal length where relevant
- Maximum width, diameter or circumference with a clear label
- Base, opening, head or attachment dimensions where compatibility depends on them
- Product weight for larger or hand-held items
- Which sections flex, compress or adjust
- Variant-specific dimensions where sizes differ
- A scale image or dimension diagram when the shape is difficult to describe
