Dildo buying guide: size, shape and materials
Choosing a dildo gets easier once you ignore the product name and read four details: insertable length, maximum width, shape and firmness. Two products with the same overall length can feel completely different depending on where they are widest, how much they flex and what the base is designed to do.

Start with dimensions you can picture
Photography can distort scale. Read the numbers in this order:
- Insertable length: the section designed for insertion.
- Maximum width or diameter: the widest point, which may be the head, shaft or a raised texture.
- Total length: the complete product, including a handle, base or controls.
- Base dimensions: important for grip, suction and harness compatibility.
- Weight: particularly useful when comparing glass, metal and larger powered designs.
Draw the listed width and length on paper, or hold a ruler where you can see the full measurement. It turns an abstract number into something much easier to judge.

Shape changes more than length
A tapered tip introduces width gradually. A pronounced head creates a more immediate change in profile. A curve directs pressure differently from a straight shaft, and the point where that curve begins matters as much as how dramatic it looks.
Texture deserves its own line on the shortlist. Soft, firm or rigid?

What should the base do?
A suction cup can support hands-free positioning on a clean, smooth surface. A broad base can also make a product easier to hold. Neither automatically makes it harness compatible: match the base to the harness or O-ring and choose a dildo made for that use.

Build a shortlist in five minutes

Lubricant, cleaning and storage
Use the lubricant recommended for the product. Water based is a practical starting point for many toys, while silicone and hybrid formulas need a compatibility check with silicone and other soft-touch materials.
Clean and dry the toy after use, paying attention to any motors, charging ports, removable bases or mixed materials. Inspect rigid glass products before use and stop using one if it develops a chip, crack or rough edge.
