Dildo buying guide: size, shape and materials
Choosing a dildo gets easier once you ignore the product name and read four details: insertable length, maximum width, shape and firmness. Two products with the same overall length can feel completely different depending on where they are widest, how much they flex and what the base is designed to do.
Use this guide as a ruler rather than a rulebook. There is no universal first size; the useful comparison is between the dimensions, texture and intended use of products that appeal to you. If scale is difficult to picture online, compare current products in person at Alexandria or Rydalmere.
Start with dimensions you can picture
Photography can distort scale. Read the numbers in this order:
- Insertable length: the section the manufacturer identifies for insertion.
- Maximum width or diameter: the widest point, which may be the head, shaft or a raised texture.
- Total length: the complete product, including a handle, base or controls.
- Base dimensions: important for grip, suction and harness compatibility.
- Weight: particularly useful when comparing glass, metal and larger powered designs.
Draw the listed width and length on paper, or hold a ruler where you can see the full measurement. It turns an abstract number into something much easier to judge.
The Knight Cock 3D Triple Density Dildo is a good example. Its listing separates a 12.7 cm (5-inch) insertable length from its complete size and gives a 4 cm (1.57-inch) diameter. That is more useful than trying to estimate scale from the box.
Shape changes more than length
A tapered tip introduces width gradually. A pronounced head creates a more immediate change in profile. A curve directs pressure differently from a straight shaft, and the point where that curve begins matters as much as how dramatic it looks.
Texture deserves its own line on the shortlist. The Magma Silicone 7-inch Dildo by Tantus uses raised, molten-looking ridges. Its listing states a 17.8 cm (7-inch) total length, 15.8 cm (6.25-inch) insertable length and 3.8 cm (1.5-inch) maximum diameter. The raised pattern changes the profile along the shaft, so that maximum diameter matters more than the seven-inch name alone.

A product photograph can sell the mood. The dimensions tell you what will actually arrive.
Soft, firm or rigid?
Material influences flexibility, surface feel, weight, cleaning and lubricant compatibility, but the material name is only the beginning.
Silicone can be soft and flexible, firm, dual-density or used as one part of a mixed construction. The Dillio Platinum Secret Explorer is listed in platinum-cured silicone with a smooth surface; the Magma is listed in Tantus Super Soft Silicone with raised texture. They will not feel the same simply because both listings say silicone.

What should the base do?
A suction cup can support hands-free positioning on a clean, smooth surface. A broad base can also make a product easier to hold. Neither automatically means harness compatible: compare the base with the harness or O-ring measurements and check that the listing names that use.
The Dillio and Magma listings state harness compatibility. Icicles No. 86 lists a removable 5.2 cm (2-inch) base intended for grip and harness use. Double-ended products make a different trade: there may be no single broad base, so compare both ends, the full length and the intended position.
For anal use, choose a product intended for that purpose with a broad flared base or another reliable retrieval feature. Planned Parenthood recommends a flared base for anal toys.
Manual, vibrating or thrusting?
A manual dildo keeps positioning and movement in your hands. Powered designs can add vibration, rotation or thrusting, but they also add controls, charging and moving parts.

Build a shortlist in five minutes
Start with the product that appeals to you, then answer six questions:
- Is the listed intended use right for you?

Lubricant, cleaning and storage
Use the lubricant recommended for the exact product. Water based is a practical starting point for many toys, while silicone and hybrid formulas need a specific compatibility check with silicone and other soft-touch materials.
Clean and dry the product according to its instructions. Motors, charging ports, removable bases and mixed materials can change the correct method. Inspect rigid glass products before use and stop using one if it develops a chip, crack or rough edge.
