Types of personal lubricant: how to choose
Most people do not need a shelf full of lubricant. They need one bottle that works with what they are using and feels practical to reach for again.
Ignore ‘warming’, ‘anal’ and ‘premium’ for a moment. First find the base—water, silicone, hybrid or oil—then check what the exact label says about the toy or barrier it will touch. Water based: the versatile starting point
If you are buying one bottle to use across different toys, water based is often the simplest place to begin. It generally rinses away more readily than longer-lasting formulas, but the exact label still decides toy and condom compatibility. Some formulas also need reapplication as the water evaporates or absorbs.
pjur Aqua is a neutral water-based formula labelled as compatible with latex condoms. Gun Oil H2O is another water-based option in a larger bottle. They share a base, not an identical formula or bottle experience.
Silicone and hybrid: staying power with a label check
Staying power is the main reason to look beyond water based. Silicone formulas generally keep their glide for longer and do not wash away as readily in water. They can also take more effort to wash from skin or fabric.
pjur Original is silicone based. JO Classic Hybrid blends water- and silicone-based ingredients. A hybrid is not a universal middle ground: JO's current product copy specifies non-silicone toys.
Do not assume every silicone lubricant works with every silicone toy. When the toy and lubricant labels disagree—or say nothing useful—choose the formula named by the toy manufacturer.
‘Anal’, ‘warming’ and ‘flavoured’ are second labels
These words describe intended use or sensation, not the base formula. Anal lubricants may be water, silicone or hybrid. They may be thicker or longer lasting, but that varies by product.
pjur Back Door Anal Glide is silicone based and contains jojoba extract. Wet Stuff Strawberry is a flavoured, warming, water-based formula. Their front labels lead with different ideas, but the base still decides the first compatibility check.
For sensation formulas, read the ingredients and intended-use information as well. If a warming or cooling product does not feel comfortable, wash it off and choose a neutral formula.
One rule to remember: oil and latex do not mix
Oil-based formulas can provide long-lasting glide and may double as massage products when the label permits. Healthdirect advises that oil can weaken latex and increase the chance of a condom breaking, so do not use an oil-based lubricant with latex condoms.
Oil may also stain fabric and can be incompatible with some toys. A household oil or product intended only for massage is not automatically suitable as personal lubricant; use a product labelled for the intended use.
